LG Bosses Want Voter Registration Stopped

The federal government was on Thursday called upon to stop the on-going voter registration, in the interest of the people.

This was the position taken at a press conference on the exercise organised by local governments in Alimosho Federal constituency of Lagos State.

Briefing newsmen, the legislator representing Alimosho constituency one, Adelabu Onibiyo, said the people of the constituency had, so far, discovered that, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has a hidden agenda to manipulate the exercise, with a view to paving way for tenure extension.

He said of the more than 600,000 people in the constituency, only about 7,500 people had been registered.

He said the constituency required 800 machines to do a thorough job but that only seven were available, with four partially working.

“The available record as at the time of this press conference showed that only 7,500 voters have been registered, two weeks into the commencement of the exercise in our constituency”.

“Whereas, if 800 functional machines have been supplied, a simple arithmetic would put the figure of those who should have been registered at about 1,800,000, that is 150 persons per day multiplied by 15 days of operations, but this is not so”.

“Therefore, without hesitation, the people of Alimosho federal constituency say no to the envisaged tenure elongation under any guise; no to the current electronic voter registration and yes to the re-introduction of the manual registration method”, he added.
