Lagos teachers have suspended their strike action over the state government’s inability to pay the previously agreed 27.5% pay increase.
The teachers had resumed their strike on 25 February 2009, following the state government’s refusal to effect the increase.
The state governor had cited the state’s dwindling resources, caused by the global economic recession, as reasons for non implementation of teachers’ demands.
The teachers, today, bowed to State Governor Babatunde Fashola’s pleas to be given more time; or be forced to consider downsizing if the agreement must be honoured at all costs.
“The assurances of the governor, his plea, and his commitment to our demand require us to take a bold step and action now,” said Michael Alugba, chairman of the teachers’ union.
