Lagos sends motorists to psychiatric hospital

About 2,612 motorists were in 2008 sent to the Yaba Psychiatric Hospital by the Lagos State Government in 2008 for driving against traffic and related traffic offences.

The state Commissioner of Transportation, Prof. Bamidele Badejo, made this disclosure in Lagos on Tuesday during the annual ministerial press briefing to mark the second anniversary of the Mr. Babatunde Fashola-led administration in the state.

Badejo said that none of those tested showed any sign of mental illness other than that they were generally in a hurry to get to their destination.

He said that out of a total of 15,067 vehicles arrested in 2008 for violating traffic offences, private vehicle accounted for 6,246 while the remaining 8,221 were commercial vehicles.

In the last one year, Badejo stated that reckless driving had resulted in 1,067 road accidents with 268 people sent to their deaths while 1,735 were injured.

He appealed for patience on the part of drivers, adding that most of the accidents in the state were attributable to human errors borne out of impatience and lack of regard for other road users.

The commissioner pointed out that the state government established over 400 vehicle licence renewal centres in the last one year on the platform of Autoreg, using branches of various banks in the state.

He added that the motor vehicle administration and management department of the ministry had captured a total of 1.3million vehicles on its database on the platform of autoreg, adding that from available data, the documents of 300,000 vehicles in the state had expired.

He appealed to owners of the vehicles to take advantage of the improved services to renew the particulars.

Badejo said the MVAM registered a total of 223,764 vehicles in the ratio of 179,764 private vehicles to 44,680 commercial vehicles.

Besides, 42,315 motorcycles were registered in the ratio of 13,094 private motorcycles to 28,411 commercial operators.
