Lagos bans okada riders from carrying pregnant women, pupils

Lagos State government has stopped commercial motorcycle operators from carrying pregnant women in the metropolis.

The Special Adviser to the state Governor on Transportation, Mr Kayode Opeifa, said this on Monday.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press and Pubic Relations Officer, state Ministry of Transportation, Mr Sina Thorpe, the government warned that any commercial motorcyclist caught with pregnant women and children would be arrested and prosecuted.

According to Opeifa, at no time should any motorcycle operator carry any visibly pregnant woman or school aged children or women with babies on their backs.

He said: “This is one of the moves to ensure security of lives in the state.

“As from July 1, 2010, the government will commence full enforcement of all road traffic laws and regulations guiding the use of motorcycle operation in the state.”

Opeifa said that the government would not tolerate it anymore, saying that the operators would face the consequence of the law if caught.

He also stated that the government had restricted the age of motorcycle riders in the state to 18 years, adding “nobody below the age of 18 is allowed to ride motorcycle in the state again.”
