President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday arrived in Johannesburg for the 2010 FIFA World cup in South Africa.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Jonathan arrived at Water Kloof Airforce Base, Pretoria, early on Friday and was received by Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Amb. Buba Marwa.
Also on hand to receive the Nigerian president was the Consular-General, Mr Okey Emuchem, Sports Minister Ibrahim Bio and Foreign Affairs Minister Odein Ajumogobia.
Jonathan is among 50 world leaders expected to attend the opening ceremony of the World Cup at the 50,000 capacity stadium in Soccer City, Johannesburg, later in the day.
He is also likely to watch the first match between the host, South Africa, and Mexico.
The president is also scheduled to watch the Super Eagles match with Argentina on Saturday.
Other events lined up for Jonathan are a meeting with the Super Eagles before their match and later a meeting with the Nigerian community in South Africa.
Similarly, the Federal Government delegation, led by the Senate President, Sen. David Mark, arrived in Johannesburg for the first football World Cup holding in Africa between June 11 and July 11.
Other members of the Nigerian delegation are Governors Bukola Saraki of Kwara, Gbenga Daniel of Ogun, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers and Ali Modu Sherriff of Borno.
Others are the Ministers of Information and Communications Dora Akunyili, Youth Development Akinlabi Olasunkanmi and Women Affairs Josephine Anenih.
