Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has described the lingering intra-party acrimony within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as capable of undermining the very existence of the country, if it was not put in check. The party, in a statement issued yesterday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the development was symptomatic of the calibre of aspirants in the ruling party who, it said, has nothing to offer in developing the nation.
” Never in Nigeria history has there been such a bitter contest for a party’s ticket as the nation is now witnessing between President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar,” said, blaming the ruling party and its candidates for not making their campaign issues-based.
The ACN accused both sides of crossing the line of decency in their attempt to outwit one another, “with various nebulous groups using newspaper advertisements to splash mud and more mud on the opposing candidate”.
“Threats and counter-threats are flying around. Words like violent change, treason and destablisation are being used freely, when all that Nigerians would like to hear are how each candidate will help turn around the fortunes of the country if elected,” the party said.
The statement also berated the leadership of the PDP whom it described as lacking the requisite moral authority or the conviction to put a halt to the raging conflict .
