Hackers attacked the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) website forcing it to be shut down on Wednesday.
The Nigerian hacker group, NaijaCyberHactivists commenced the cyber attack on an agency set up to develop the region in response to the government’s plan to spend N1 billion or $6.6. million on President Goodluck Jonathan’s May 29th inauguration.
The hackers’ warned of reprisals a few days ago in a letter titled “A Visit from Hell.”
The letter expressed frustration at the violence that erupted since Jonathan’s election and the governments repeated claims that uptick in violence is a result of the country’s burgenoing democracy and attribution to growing pains.
The NDDC head of Corporate Affairs, Toye Abosede, confirmed the attack. In an interview with NEXT he said, “Some hackers invaded our site. They removed some of our pictures and replaced it with other things.”
Abosede said the commission believes other agencies may have also been affected.
“Naturally, there must be some sort of investigation”. He added that NDDC is going to work on beefing up its Internet security as the incident has shown that the site is not safe.
The hackers, whose mission is to “Hand over the whip to the horse,” said that President Jonathan’s spending during the inauguration which is simply an induction into office shouldn’t be a “a series of open-ended events organized into convoluted books and chapters.”
Should the inauguration budget remain as is and Nigerian Freedom of Information Billpoised for review on may 29th as well not pass, NaijaCyberHacktivists vows that its cyberattacks will range from government websites, to all financial institutions, networks and telecommunications companies.
