Unknown gunmen, in the early hours of Friday, kidnapped wife of the Rivers State Commissioner for Sport, Mr Boma Iyaye and took her to an unknown destination.
Family sources said Mrs Joy Iyaye was forced out of her car, while driving out of her home for the day’s business.
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Rita Abbey said police had already swung into action to ensure the release of Mrs Iyaye and in the process of trying to clamp down on the hoodlums. Police in the state said they have recovered the vehicle of the lady from where the abductors abandoned it.
Spokesman of the Joint Task Force in Rivers State, Major Sagir Musa said the motive for the adduction is pecuniary and has to do with extorting some ransom from the state government and Iyaye’s family.
Musa who reinstated the position of the JTF of zero ransom payment to kidnappers, further insisted that nothing would be paid to the hoodlums as a bargain for securing the release of Mrs Iyaye.
He, however, gave the assurance that all security agencies in the state had been duly alerted to prosecute her immediate release and called on members of the public and the family not to entertain any fear about the kidnap.
As at press time, the whereabout of the kidnapers was not known.
