Gunmen kidnap Imo Speakers children

Armed men have kidnapped two sons of the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Goodluck Opiah.

The boys, aged between 10 and 12, were said to have been accosted and taken away by the gunmen at the entrance of Opiahs home in Aba, Abia State on Tuesday evening.

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Ezeozue, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Wednesday.

But Ezeozue said only the Speaker could speak on whether the kidnappers left a contact or had placed a ransom for the release of the children.

When contacted, Opiah said he was not prepared to respond to any question on the incident which had affected activities in the Assembly.

The Speaker, who was billed to have an interactive session with journalists as part of the celebration of one year of legislative activities in the state, called off the parley because of the incident.

Imo State has recorded nine kidnap cases with one involving the wife of the Chairman Associated Bus Company Plc.
