Gunmen kidnap couple, demand N60m ransom

A MIDDLE-AGED man, Mr. Michael Aguowo and his Liberian wife have been kidnapped at Nibo in Awka South local government area of Anambra State by a gang which has demanded N60 million ransom. The suspected kidnappers numbering about 20, were believed to be heavily armed, laid ambush at boy’s quarters inside the home of Aguowo at about 9:00pm on Saturday night and later took away the couple in a Commando manner few minutes after they had retired for the night.

The victim had got married last Thursday at the Court registry in Enugu and returned home on Saturday with his wife where they held a get-together at his father’s compound before going to his own house.

The motive for the kidnap is not yet known, but the mother of Mr. Aguowo, Mrs. Roseline Aguowo said that merry making was still going on in her compound only to be informed that her son and his wife had been kidnapped.

She narrated the story thus: “He (my son) had a call and went to answer the phone when he met four boys who held him. He was tying his bath towel and they pulled the towel off him. They entered the house and searched all the rooms and took away anything that they felt was valuable, including documents and telephones. Then they took the couple with the hummer jeep and left. When the police came, they searched everywhere around our town but they could not see them, Up till now, the police is yet to give us any clue as to the where about of my son and his wife”.

Although the mother of the victim was not specific, she recalled that there was an issue that had to do with a girl from the same Nibo community which she objected to her son getting married to, adding however that she could not link the incident with the matter.

She said further that when men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) spoke with the kidnappers on phone during which they demanded N60 million ransom before Michael Aguowo and his wife could be released, the family offered to pay N5 million adding that she has left everything in the hands of God and members of the public.
