Nigeria probed a series of Christmas Day terror attacks in which at least 40 people were killed, as the military arrested four suspects for the carnage that targeted churches in the restive north of the country. Spokesman for the military in the city of Jos, Captain Charles Okocha said the four were being investigated as he asked terrified citizens to go about their normal duties without fear. The arrests were made at Mountain of Fire and Miracle church in Jos which killed a police officer on duty and injured several worshippers yesterday. The death toll rose to 40 as church bombings and two suicide attacks were witnessed in other northern cities. Nigeria’s president addressed the country after the bombing and vowed to wrestle insecurity to a standstill. “I want to reassure all Nigerians that Government will not relent in its determination to bring to justice all the perpetrators of acts of violence and all others before now,” Goodluck Jonathan said. Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for several bombings and shootings in the north and capital city of Abuja. The sect, which wants to install an Islamic government, has been waging war on Nigeria state in its quest to fulfill its ambition but the Nigerian military also battles them especially in their northern stronghold. The highest toll was at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Madalla in Niger State where 27 persons died on the spot after bomb exploded at a car park.
