‘Final Census Figures out Next Year’

Chairman, National Po-pulation Commission (NPC), Chief Samuila Danko Makama, has said final result of the 2006 Census would be ready next year.
Makama told the Senate President, Senator David Mark during a courtesy call yesterday, that processing of the final result and tabulation was going on at seven Data Processing Centres.
According to him, the tabulation will show composition and characteristics of the population, while the data will be vital for national planning. Annotation of the date and occupational classification of the data is on-going and will be ready early next year.
Makama said the real benefits of government’s investments in the Census is the data on characteristics of the population, adding that NPC would embark on massive dissemination of the 2006 census data, with a view to ensuring that data are accessible to planners at all stages and the general public.”
He said, towards this end, the Commission would organise series of seminars at national, state and local government levels and in addition, the data will be accessible through the Commissions web site.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Patricia Etteh, yesterday joined other sections of the country to express dissatisfaction with the conduct of the 2006 National Population Census(NPC).
Etteh said this while receiving Makama at the National Assembly complex.
She said, “the population exercise in a country is very important and it is an exercise that I believe should be handled properly. Though during the last exercise, Nigerians witnessed some flaws which are not your own making, but because the exercise started very late. I want to implore you that although it is not an annual exercise, but at the same time, we need to know, and we want an accurate job done. So I think this is the right time to start planning towards the next census.
