FG, UN talking on Niger Delta crisis

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Nations (UN) have been exploring possibilities of collaboration on how to resolve the Niger Delta crisis.

However, government did not want the crisis to be seen as an international crisis, Empowered Newswire has reported.

At his first meeting in Germany with President Umaru YarAdua in June, the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, offered resources from the world body to help Nigeria find a way out of the crisis in the region.

Empowered Newswire said sources confirm that the UN and former President Olusegun Obasanjos administration had been working on the initiation.

The news agency said talks were on between the UN and the Obasanjo Presidency on the conduct of an international conference on the Niger Delta to be organised by the UN and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

But the Obasanjo administration was said to have been reluctant to encourage the effort because it did not want the Niger Delta issue to become internationalised.
