FG may force airlines to reduce fares

The Federal Government has concluded plans to enforce foreign carriers operating in the country to lower their fares.

The Minister of State for Air Transport, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, said this at the submission of the report by the committee on ticket pricing on international routes led by the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Aviation,Captain Shehu Usman Iyal.

In the report of the committee which was set up about four months ago, following wide criticisms of high fares being charged by the mega carriers, it was said a great disparity existedbetween the fares slammed on Nigerian passengers and their counterparts across the world.

According to the minister, government set up the committee based on the need by make the airlines reduce their fares.

While describing the charges as unfair, Fani-Kayode hinted governments intention to notify the foreign carriers on the rejection of the continued high charge on Nigerian passengers.

If the Iyal-led committees recommendations find favour with government, all foreign carriers operating in Nigeria may henceforth be made to publish their actual total fares rather than the present base fares they are giving the public.

Also, taxes and charges included in international tickets must only be those approved by the relevant Nigerian aeronautical authorities in accordance with the requirements of Bilateral Air Services Agreements allocated to passengers in the guise of unauthorised taxes and charges as currently being done.
