FOLLOWING a bomb scare at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Thursday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has asked all security agencies at the airport to be more alert.
Mr. Akin Olukunle, General Manager, Public Affairs, FAAN told reporters yesterday there was a rumour at the airport that a bomb was planted at the new MMA2 Terminal.
He stated that the case had also been referred to the of State Security Service for investigation.
The Guardian learnt due to the bomb scare, flights were suspended temporarily.
About midday on Thursday, different airlines like Virgin Nigeria, Bellview, Arik Air, Chanchangi Airline, and Aero Contractors queued on ground while those that were still airborne like Southern China and others hovered in the air for close to one hour.
Mr. Supo Atobatele, General Manager Public Affairs Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), who confirmed the incident said the airlines were put on hold for precautionary measure.
Atobatele disclosed that the airlines were grounded by the Air Traffic Controller to enable them to carry out routine checks on passengers and their luggage while those that were airborne were not allowed to land until after the check.
He said that an emergency meeting of an airport security committee which comprises representatives of all security agencies including security personnel of FAAN was called to review actions taken so far on security attempts and reasons for the threat.
