More than 1,583 people were killed by law enforcement agents in Nigeria between 2006 and 2010, the local media reported Sunday, quoting rights group Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEAP).
It quoted the group’s report, Impunity in Nigeria, as showing an increase in extra-judicial killings in the period under review, with 2010 recording the highest percentage.
‘Most of the perpetrators have not been prosecuted,’ LEAP national coordinator Chinoye Obiagwu said. ‘Until gross human rights violations are properly reported, documented, investigated, perpetrators prosecuted and victims given redress, Nigeria will continue to be in breach of its legal obligations under its laws and international treaties.’
The Nigeria police have been accused of perpetrating most of the killings.
