Ex-ECOMOG boss seeks end to Niger Delta militias activities

A former Commander of the Economic Community of West African States Cease-Fire Monitoring Group, Brig-Gen. Francis Agyemfra (rtd), on Monday, advised the Federal Government to decisively stamp-out the activities of the Niger Delta militias.

He also deplored the rising conflicts within the ECOWAS sub-region, which he said, posed serious threats to peace, stability and development within the sub-region

Agyemfra, a Ghanaian, spoke to our correspondent at the end of a news conference in Accra, Ghana on West African Security Challenges and ECOMOG, which was organised by the International Institute for Journalism and InWent, a non-governmental organisation based in Germany.

The erstwhile ECOMOG boss noted that the Niger Delta crisis could endanger peace in the country and the ECOWAS sub-region.

He said, The Niger Delta issue in Nigeria is a very serious matter that the government has to deal with. This should not be encouraged. You dont allow people to form militia where there is an Army or the Police.

People should not be made to lose confidence in the security. There is need for the government to be firm in dealing with the issue.
