EFCC asks parties to stop corrupt politicians

Nigeria’s anti-graft Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has published a list of politicians who should be barred by their parties from contesting next year’s general elections, because they are facing corruption charges. The local media reported Monday that the ‘advisory list’ contains 100 names, 40 of whom are politicians, including former and serving governors and ministers, former bankers, top government officials and some foreign and Nigerian businessmen.

The former governors on the list include former Northern Jigawa State Governor Saminu Turaki; former South-east Abia State Governor Orji Kalu and former South-west Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose.

Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, are also on the list.

EFCC spokesman Femi Babafemi has confirmed the list, saying it is ‘part of our advisory list on those who are standing trial for corruption’.
