Dokubo-Asari brokers ceasefire agreement with Ateke Tom

The Niger Delta peace process may have have been reinforced with leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, brokering a three-month ceasefire agreement with militant groups in the area as well as warlord in the Rivers State creeks, Ateke Tom.

A statement by Dokubo-Asari Foundation issued late Sunday night said the development followed a personal negotiation Dokubo-Asari had with Ateke as well as other militant groups in the creeks of the Niger Delta.

�In a developing story, this evening, Dokubo-Asari, the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, has confirmed that after a lengthy discussion with Ateke Tom and other militant groups, it was agreed that there will be a three-month cessation of hostility against the Nigerian state, starting from Monday, September 23.

�He also confirmed Ateke Tom�s personal commitment to him to join this effort to reach out to other groups in ensuring that the ceasefire will last, as they wait for the Nigerian state next move on this new development.

�He also reiterated his personal commitment in ensuring that the ceasefire will last by continuing to reach out to other groups who are currently adopting a wait-and-see approach,� the statement said.
