A Magistrate Court in Nigeria’s South-west town of Osogbo has ordered a convicted thief to be given 10 strokes of the cane once every two months for the next five years, in addition to serving a five-year jail term. Magistrate Adewunmi Makanjuola pronounced the sentence on 41-year-old Timothy Awolowo, Monday after he pleaded guilty to a burglary charge. The judge said the convict, who was not represented by a lawyer, has shown no remorse for the offence, hence he should be caned bi-monthly until he is remorseful.
Awolowo was convicted for a similar offence in 2001.
