Building collapse kills two

A residential building collapsed on Wednesday in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, killing at least two people and trapping several others under the rubble, officials said.

“Some people are still trapped,” a government official speaking on condition of anonymity said late Wednesday, adding two people had been found dead so far and 13 were wounded.

Rescue operations continued Wednesday night at the building said to have been three storeys. Half of the building was under construction at the time of the collapse, while people were living in the other half.

Building collapses are relatively common in Nigeria, mainly due to the use of sub-standard materials and violations of construction regulations.

In July 2008, a building under construction collapsed in Abuja, killing at least three workers.
