British Parliamentarians to visit

BRITISH parliamentarians will be in Nigeria next week on a fact-finding mission. The delegation, Members of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Nigeria, will meet with public officials, civil society groups, communities and business people to gain an understanding of the progress that Nigeria has made and the challenges it faces. The group will visit Lagos, Abuja and Jos and have meetings to discuss themes including power and infrastructure, corruption, the Niger Delta crisis, freedom of information, and human rights and development.

The visit is meant to raise the profile of Nigeria in the United Kingdom and deepen engagement between the two countries. This is the fourth delegation that the APPG will send to Nigeria, and the fourth visit for chair of the group, John Robertson MP. will be joined by three other British Members of Parliament who are visiting Nigeria for the first time. The first visit of APPG in 2005 focused on the crisis in the Niger Delta. The last two visits saw MPs travelling across the country to look at a range of issues affecting the nation as a whole.
