Biden phones Nigeria rivals before polls

U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden has called on Nigeria’s main presidential hopefuls to work for “peaceful” and “credible” general polls slated for March 28.

“Biden spoke yesterday with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari,” the U.S. embassy in Nigeria said in a Thursday statement.

“He Biden noted his concern about the violence during some recent election-related events and reiterated the need for both candidates to make clear that such violence has no place in democratic elections,” it added.

“Biden affirmed that the United States stands with the Nigerian people in support of credible and peaceful elections, and will continue to stand with the Nigerian people whatever the outcome,” read the embassy statement.

On March 28, Nigeria is slated to hold presidential and parliamentary elections.
