An airforce jet on a routine test-flight in Nigeria’s Niger delta region crashed yesterday as it was attempting a landing.The jet was short just a few meters of the landing strip when the accident occurred.
Sources told Saharareporters that the jet was part of a 7-jet squadron making routine air drills. No injuries were reported as the pilot and co-pilot reportedly ejected safely from the crashed plane.
The accident occured as preparations were underway for a major display of Air Force prowess at the 7th edition of the Nigeria Air Force Games taking place in Calabar in Cross River State and Uyo in Akwa Ibom State from Oct. 29 to Nov. 5.
Some 1000 Nigerian Air Force personnel are scheduled to complete in 22 sporting events at the games. About 200 VIPs will be in attendance.
In a press interview, Air Commodore Nurudeen Balogun said the theme of the 2011 Games is “Harmony through Sports” in line with the transformation agenda of the federal government.
“The 7th edition of the NAF Games will offer another opportunity for Nigerians to assess their air force. With the recent boost in the nation’s air assets and capabilities, five aircraft types will be involved in fly past activities as well as rappelling during the games”, he said.
