Agip workers embark on strike

ACTIVITIES were yesterday disrupted at the office of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company in Port Harcourt as staff of the firm embarked on an industrial action over failure of the management to pay them their security allowance.

When Vanguard visited the place the gate was under lock and key and the staff were seen outside discussing their actions in groups.

Some of them who volunteered comments said trouble started yesterday after the management failed to turn up for a meeting it slated with them to discuss the issue over the weekend.
They said the management had provided hotel accommodation for the union members over the weekend with a view that they were coming to discuss the issue but that management did not show up all through the weekend. Irked by this action they had to shut the gate yesterday.

It was also gathered that management had since agreed to pay the security allowance. But the bone of contention was what should go to each category of staff. While management wanted it to vary sources told Vanguard that the chapters PENGASSA wanted the same amount across the board.
No management staff was ready to speak to Vanguard on the development.

It could not be confirmed as at press time if the industrial action would linger on for long. Meanwhile, there were threats at the premises of the company that if management failed to comply with their demands before Tuesday they might be tempted to tamper with production operations.
