Abuja Set For OPEC Talks

Nigeria’s police said they would deploy 2 500 men in the federal capital this week to ensure maximum security as the country for the first time would host a summit of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec).

Lawrence Alobi, Abuja’s police chief, said: “We want to make sure that all those coming for the Opec conference are given adequate security.

“We are going to beef up our patrol system and we are going to step up co-operation with the state security services and other agencies for intelligence gathering.”

Nigeria was the world’s sixth producer of crude oil.

The Opec summit proper would take place on Thursday, but would be preceded on Wednesday by a ministerial-level meeting.

It was just one week since a senior police officer was shot dead in Abuja in broad daylight.
