US Embassy Warden’s Message: Lekki Tollgate Protests

The U.S. Consulate General Lagos advises U.S. citizens to avoid the toll plazas this weekend. U.S. citizens should note recent public reports that a protest march is being planned to go to the Admiralty Circle and Chevron Toll Plazas on Victoria Island, Lagos on Saturday, December 17, 2011.

The march is in protest of the collection of toll fees on the Lekki/Eti-Osa Expressway planned to commence on Sunday, December 18, 2011. Lekki area residents are reportedly demanding a total cancellation of tolling and fencing on the road, and plan to occupy the two toll plazas until the government agrees to their demands.
