Death toll in Ebonyi communal violence rises to 67

The number of people who died in the New Year’s eve communal violence in Nigeria’s South-Eastern state of Ebonyi has increased to 67 after the discovery of more bodies, the local Nation newspaper reported Monday.

The paper said youths combing the town of Ezillo, where unknown gunmen opened fire on the community, discovered the bodies in the bushes, burnt houses and other places in the community.

Indications are that the death toll could rise, as the paper quoted a youth leader, Monday Eze, as saying many families are yet to see some of their members.

Most of the victims are women and children.

PANA learnt that the community had been embroiled in violence since 2009 over a contentious chieftaincy title.
