A man suspected to be the spokesman for the Islamic sect Boko Haram has been arrested in Maiduguri, capital of Nigeria’s northern state of Borno, the State Security Service (SSS) said on Wednesday.
The state director of SSS, Mr. Ahmed Abdullahi, who announced the arrest to journalists on Wednesday evening, said the secret police had been trailing the Spokesman for some time.
He, however, did not identify him by name.
The man who has been widely quoted in local and international media as the spokesman of Boko Haram is Abul Qaga.
In November 2011, the SSS also claimed to have arrested a ‘spokesman’ for the sect, whom they identified then as Ali Sada Umar Konduga.
Borno state is the spiritual base of the Islamic sect, which has killed 935 people in 164 attacks since it started its violent campaign in July 2009, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).
