Supreme Court sacks state governor

Nigeria’s apex Supreme Court on Friday sacked the Governor of northern Kebbi state, Mr. Usman Saidu Dakingari, from office and asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a fresh governorship poll in the state.

Justice Walter Onnoghen, who delivered the lead judgement, overturned the ruling of the Court of Appeal, which had upheld Dakingari’s election.

In Nov. last year, the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Kebbi State nullified the election of Gov. Dakingari of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ordered INEC to conduct fresh election in the state.

Justice Mairo Laruba Mohammed, who considered the election petition along with two other justices, said the April 2011 election was marred by irregularities as illegal electoral materials were largely used to declare Dakingari winner of the poll.

However, the Court of Appeal later overturned the ruling, paving the way for the challenger, opposition Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), to head to the apex court.
