A truck carrying dozens of passengers and driven by a drunken driver in northern Nigeria tipped over, killing 18 people and seriously injuring 50 others, an official said Friday.
The accident occurred late Thursday in Kaduna state as the truck was headed to Nigeria’s economic capital Lagos, state Road Safety Corps official Muktar Maidabino said.
Its trailer was carrying 119 passengers, mostly jobless labourers, who had paid a small fee, Maidabino said.
“The driver, who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol, lost control of the truck at Birnin Gwari town and the truck fell on its side, throwing out all the 119 passengers,” Maidabino said, adding that the driver was arrested.
