We got the following report from the British High Commission in Lagos

SECURITY INCIDENT REPORT APRIL � JULY 2006

This report has been compiled using information received from the diplomatic communities, security consultants and expatriates within Nigeria. In addition some items have been taken from press reports. Whilst we try to ensure that the report is as accurate as possible, some items may be less reliable than others may. Please find below a summary of the security related incidents, which were noted by, or reported to, the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos during the period of 1st April � 31st July 2006.

APRIL

01 April 2006: Police arrested four men found with fake identity cards of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos. It would appear that the four suspects had used the fake ID cards to gain an unknown sum of money from an expatriate Managing Director of a company in Ikeja, Lagos. The suspects claimed to have obtained the logo of the agency by using a phone camera to take a snapshot of the original logo from the EFCC fliers. The computer used in producing the identity cards and the car used for the operation were recovered.

01 April 2006: Ketu Police Division of Lagos arrested a driver and his conductor over the theft of a Nissan commercial bus put in their care for over five years. The men had been given the bus to run as a commercial bus on the Interstate route. It would appear that the two suspects had taken the bus during one of their chartered services to convey some passengers to Akure. From there, they took it to the eastern part of the country for sale. Police investigation is ongoing.

10 April 2006: Area “B” Command, Apapa of the Nigerian Police Force quelled a Maritime Dock Workers protest who were disturbing public peace, damaging property and vandalising vehicles within the port. The workers were allegedly affected by the recent port concession. Twenty of the protesters were arrested. No causalities were recorded.

10 April 2006: Two groups of social miscreants (Area Boys) armed with machetes, axes, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons engaged in a disturbance at the motor park along Medical Store Road, Ikeja over control of the park. An armoured personnel carrier and mobile police patrol vehicles were deployed to Ikeja to curtail the fight while the chairmen of the factions and ten others were arrested.

12 April 2006: Police arrested a man who allegedly disguised himself as a pastor of the Life and Faith Foundation Church and attempted to rob a lady of jewellery worth N5 million. The suspect, who was identified as Charles Aghaghoma, is presently being detained at Area G Police Command, Ogba, Ikeja.

12 April 2006: A gang of robbers invaded Otunba Gbenga Daniel Estate, Asero, Ogun State, killing two security guards on duty. The robbers, who were heavily armed, also seriously injured another security guard that is currently receiving treatment.
13 April 2006: Sixty suspected armed robbers laid siege along Berger on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos, raiding shops and snatching cars at gun point and firing weapons indiscriminately. The gang engaged police in the area, which led to police from the State Command Headquarters, Apapa, Trinity and Kirikiri Divisions sending reinforcements. Several expended shells of 7.62 and 9mm cartridges were recovered from the scene. The police made no arrest.

14 April 2006: An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was shot dead during a fire fight between the police and armed robbers at Yemetu Igosun in Ibadan metropolis, Oyo State. The ASP was shot while responding to a distress call from members of the public with other policemen.

16 April 2006: There was a fire outbreak at the Human Resources building at the University of Lagos. A team of Policemen and Fire fighters put out the fire. Cause of fire and value of property destroyed are yet to be ascertained. No life was lost.

17 April 2006: Four armed robbers invaded the Be Happy Palace Hotel at No.39 Ijede Road, Itamaga, Ikorodu, stealing unspecified amount of money. During the incident one of the customers bearing a SPY Identity Card was shot before the suspects left the scene in a stolen Honda Accord Car. Whilst making their escape, the suspects car collided with a Mazda bus which resulted in the arrest of one of the robbers while the three others escaped. Several weapons and live ammunition were recovered from the scene.

17 April 2006: Two armed robbery suspects who emerged from their hideout in a near by bush, close to a broken down vehicle under repair, attacked the occupants killing one of them. The two suspects escaped on a motorcycle along Kingsway Road, Ikoyi.

19 April 2006: An armed robbery suspect was arrested by a team of Anti-Robbery Policemen from Ojodu Police Station. The suspect and other unknown person(s) allegedly robbed occupants of 11, Olaleke Taiwo Street, Ojodu of their belongings.

22 April 2006: Two policemen, a sergeant and a constable, in the Osun State Police Command, were arrested and detained for allegedly killing a commercial bus driver at a check point. It would appear the two policemen shot the driver for refusing to offer N20 allegedly demanded by the police at a checkpoint along Ilesa-Akure Express Road.

23 April 2006: A suspected armed robber was arrested along Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island, for allegedly robbing a female outside 1004 flats first gate, Maroko, of a cell phone, some vital documents and a cash sum of five thousand naira.

23 April 2006: A petroleum product syndicate was arrested with twenty-six drums containing liquid substance suspected to be stolen petroleum product at Ejinrin waterside, Epe.

25 April 2006: A suspected-armed robber died after jumping from a moving vehicle in an attempt to escape arrest along Alapere Road, Lagos. The suspect was escaping with other gang members after robbing three females of their valuables. Five live cartridges and one Sim-card were recovered from the suspect�s vehicle.

26 April 2006: Miscreants (Area Boys) armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, from Fadeyi/Mushin axis of Ikorodu express road to Ayodele street, Fadeyi started shooting sporadically, in a yet to be determined circumstance. The area boys vandalised the windscreens of two Mercedes cars and escaped on sighting the police patrol teams drafted from Alakara and Alade Divisions. No casualties were recorded.

26 April 2006: Armed men operating in an unmarked Mercedes Benz V-Boot car shot and killed a MoPol sergeant and seriously wounded another MoPol along Ire-Akari Road. The robbers also stole one AK47 assault rifle with thirty rounds of ammunition and K2 rifle with nineteen rounds of ammunition from the sergeant and the constable respectively. No arrest was made, however, one Ak 47 rifle, a complete army camouflage uniform, one cell phone, some important documents and a cash sum of N150, 000 were recovered by police following further investigation.

27 April 2006: The anti-robbery team attached to Isolo Police Division while acting on a tip-off recovered one locally made double barrel pistol in a bush at Isolo.

30 April 2006: An unidentified male occupant jumped from a Volkswagen mini bus along Allen Avenue before it was stopped and searched by Ikeja Police. One locally made pistol with four cartridges concealed in the speaker compartment was recovered. The driver, his conductor and other occupants were arrested. State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti, Yaba is investigating.

MAY

01 May 2006: Three men operating on a motorcycle, armed with cutlasses robbed a female victim of two bags containing clothes, a Bible, one cell phone and the sum of N3,400 in cash at Osborne Bus stop, Lagos. A police patrol team from Ikoyi police station patrolling the vicinity chased the suspects and detained two of the robbers while the third person escaped. SCID Panti, Yaba is investigating.

01 May 2006: Approximately seven unidentified men forced their way through the gate to a residential compound occupied by the leader of Afenifere, Pa Abraham Adesanya. The men gained access when the gate was opened by a security guard allowing a family member to exit the compound. The robbers stole several cell phones, trinkets and a yet to be specified amount of money from the domestic staff�s quarters and escaped. No member of the family was hurt. Apapa Police Division is investigating.

01 May 2006: Four cell phones and cash yet to be estimated was stolen by five (05) armed men from a shop at No. 15 Turner Street, Amukoko. Two (02) customers at the shop were shot and injured in their leg and thigh. SCID Panti, Yaba is investigating.

02 May 2006: The Force Special Anti Robbery Squad (FSARS) attached to Adeniji Adele Command along Berger-Suya Trinity, Lagos, arrested a male with a black polythene bag containing one loaded Sub-Machine Gun (SMG). The suspect is in detention for further investigation.

02 May 2006: Miscreants (area boys) suspected to have come from Tolu Area with the intention to vandalise vehicles and other cargo, steal spare parts and other items clashed with the port workers at the Tin-Can Island second Port gate, Apapa. During the incident, vehicles were vandalised. Police quick response calmed the situation. No arrest was made as the area boys escaped through the waterways on sighting the police team. No casualties were reported.

03 May 2006: A Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), under the Jigawa State Police Command and two other police officers were shot dead by armed bandits at Kirikasama, after a gun battle when the vehicle in which they were travelling ran into robber�s ambush. Anti-riot police team was deployed to the scene but before getting there, the robbers were reported to have abandoned the operation and fled. It would appear prior to the incident the suspects had already gained access and broken into thirty-six shops before fleeing, but were unable to make off with any goods. SCID Panti, Yaba is investigating.

04 May 2006: About twenty heavily armed men invaded International Trade Fair complex (BBA market) off mile II Badagry Expressway, Festac Town, Lagos, and broke into shops. Properties valued at millions of naira were stolen.

06 May 2006: About twenty suspected political activists invaded the Bodija, Ibadan private residence of the former governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Rashidi Ladoja, and held the residence hostage for almost an hour. They were said to have arrived in three vehicles, two buses and an Audi car with a siren allegedly fixed on the rooftop, wielding lethal weapons and daring the occupants of the one-storey building to come out. The police reacted promptly to secure the area.

07 May 2006: Four Olumegbon Boys, armed with guns and cutlasses went into Ajah community and opened fire on a group of boys playing football on an open ground. Two boys were shot dead while about fifteen others sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The timely intervention from the Police averted a possible escalation of the situation, which would have been a reprisal attack from Ajah Youths. The situation was promptly brought under control. State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti, Yaba is investigating.

07 May 2006: A civil disturbance had taken place in Ajah area when thugs (fighting over a land dispute) clashed again leaving two people dead and approximately twenty others seriously injured. The latest fighting between the factions came barely a month after a similar incident occurred in which about ten people lost their lives. Meanwhile, residents of the area have started leaving en mass for fear of being attacked. Anti riot policemen were deployed in the area to maintain peace. This follows previous incidents whereby the state had witnessed series of violent incidents. The first was in Fadeyi area of the state when youths clashed, leaving three people dead. Another occurred in Ketu area, which lasted for two days and at the end, eleven people lost their lives.

07 May 2006: Approximately ten armed robbers invaded a private hospital situated at No.29 Sanni Labode Street, New Oko-Oba, and robbed a Dr. Kunle Sonaike and one other victim. Six cell phones, one mercury laptop computer, one Mercedes Benz saloon and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen. Police are investigating.

07 May 2006: During a heavy downpour, a 10-seater plane, marked Charlie 208, with three crew members, was forced to crash-land in Itori, in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun state. Two pedestrians and a commercial motorcyclist suffered minor injuries during the incident. The Brazilian pilot, along with two other crewmembers were unhurt. The pilot said the plane was heading for Ibadan when it was forced to crash-land. The two pedestrians and motorcyclists were injured when the wings of the plane allegedly hit them after it crashed landed right on the Lagos-Abeokuta highway.
07 May 2006: Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, escaped being killed by gunmen in his official vehicle. The suspected assassins were said to have shot sporadically at his car immediately after he drove out of his private residence in Isolo in Oshodi-Isolo Local Council. Police investigation is ongoing.

08 May 2006: A suspect charged for conspiracy and stealing of goods worth N3.5M who was under detention by Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB) Ikeja, was shot in the chest by the complainant in the case, the Managing Director of the company involved. The incident happened when the suspect was brought out of the cell for more interrogation. The complainant was immediately overpowered, disarmed and arrested. Ikeja Division is investigating.

08 May 2006: Unidentified persons armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons invaded the Balogun Business Association (BBA) market, Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, FESTAC, terrorising traders and vandalising the security office at the main gate. Nine suspects were arrested with a machete in their possession. Items vandalised include one Mercedes Benz saloon car and one L300 bus. Trade Fair Police Division is investigating.

09 May 2006: Six unidentified armed men robbed the residents of Adeneyi Crescent, off College Road, Ogba, of six cell phones, wrist watches, jewellery and the sum of N300,000 in cash. No arrest was made. Area G Ogba Police Command Headquarters is investigating.

10 May 2006: A federal highway patrol team while on patrol along Ikorodu-Itoki Road, intercepted two suspected armed robbers on a motorcycle. During a search of the suspects, seventy-five live cartridges of ammunition were recovered. The two suspects were arrested and detained for further investigations.

11 May 2006: Operatives of the Nigerian Immigration Service arrested a middle aged man who attempted to traffic 13 children out of the country. Also found on his possession were 17 different international passports and one ECOWAS travelling certificate. The suspect was handed over to the police for further interrogation and investigation.

13 May 2006: A 75year-old man, who resided at No 15, Inisanya Street, Ado Ekiti was hacked to death by the son of his landlord over an alleged incident involving a missing dog. The Criminal Investigating Department, CID, of the state police command is investigating the matter.

14 May 2006: Five armed robbers invaded St. Francis Catholic Church, situated along Liasu Road Ikotun and robbed one Reverend Father of an undisclosed sum of money which was church collections meant for church projects. The robbers had on arrival fired several shots. Four expended cartridges and twelve expended shells of 9mm ammunition were recovered at the scene. SCID Panti, Yaba is investigating.

14 May 2006: Approximately forty-nine decomposed bodies were exhumed and beheaded by suspected ritualists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, at the Akinyele Hausa Community Cemetery. No arrests have been made. A Police investigation is ongoing.

14 May 2006: A two-storey building, located at No.1, Alhaji Hassan Gbadamosi Street, Pleasure bus stop, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, and owned by a businessman from, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, was destroyed by fire, following a power surge. The fire was said to have started from the distribution outlet of a popular foam company within the building.

14 May 2006: Armed robbers invaded the home of a Chinese national at 1, Alhaji Inua Mohammed Street, Ajao Estate, Lagos. The five man armed robbery gang reportedly stormed the home of the Chinese national and held everyone present at gunpoint before stealing valuable property. They reportedly shot one of his housemaids in the head and escaped. No arrest has been made. A Police investigation is ongoing.

15 May 2006: Armed robbers operating in a white mini-bus and accompanied by five other unidentified vehicles, reportedly carried out an operation along Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, breaking into shops and buildings and stealing various valuable items into their waiting vans. A Police strike force from Force Headquarters Anti-robbery Squad responded killing two robbers while others escaped. Police investigation is ongoing.

15 May 2006: A fire broke out at the Junior Staff Boys Quarters of Kings College Annex located at Adeyamo Alakija Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. The cause of fire was traced to the bursting of a Liquefied Petroleum Gas Cylinder attached to the institution�s kitchen. The inferno razed down all the apartments close to it and burnt the gas attendant and four others. The fire was put out by the Federal fire service, Isolo. No casualty was recorded. The value of properties damaged by the fire is yet to be determined. Victoria Island Police Division is investigating.

15 May 2006: Eleven international passport scammers popularly known as “passport touts” were arrested and paraded by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos. Despite the movement of the passport office from its former location at Ikeja to a new place in Ikoyi, passport touts have not relented in their illicit business of forging documents at the premises of Immigration office. The suspects are under detention and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Special Duties, Zone A Headquarters is investigating.

15 May 2006: There was pandemonium at Ijaye-Ojokoro area of Lagos State when people suspected to be Okada riders and Area Boys clashed. The incident occurred at Ajala bus stop area and unconfirmed report said a man, who was attacked with a machete, later died. The clash was alleged to have been caused by an incessant extortion of money from Okada riders by the area boys. Police investigation is ongoing.

15 May 2006: There was a incident at Onipanu bus stop in Lagos State when armed bandits and policemen clashed at a robbery scene. The clash followed an alarm raised by armed robbery victim. A Police investigation is ongoing.

15 May 2006: There was a stampede in Mushin area of Lagos State, when street gangs of youths popularly called area boys, clashed for territorial control in Ojuwoye Local Government Development Area. During the clash, several people were said to have been seriously injured. Property estimated at millions of naira was allegedly destroyed before a combined team of mobile policemen were drafted to the area and put the situation under control.

16 May 2006: A section of the Defence Building (housing the Nigeria Army School of Logistics and the Air Force) located at Moloney Street, behind Tafawa Balewa Square, Obalende, Lagos Island, was destroyed by fire, with property worth millions of naira destroyed. The cause of the fire, which started from the fourth floor of the building and spread to other floors, is yet to be established. No casualties were recorded. The fire was brought under control by a swift response by men of the fire service.

16 May 2006: Policemen at Ilupeju, Lagos arrested eight suspected armed robbers terrorising residents of the area. The suspects were apprehended when detectives from Ilupeju Police Station, acting on a tip-off, swooped on them at their hideout and arrested them. Sources at the police station disclosed that the suspects were caught while consuming alcohol and smoking Indian hemp. Some hard drugs were also found in their possession.

16 May 2006: Two men from Adamo Town in Ikorodu Area of Lagos State, were arrested with two automatic Russian pistols, as well as seventy live cartridges. A police patrol team attached to the Federal Highway Patrol arrested the men along Ikorodu-Itoikin Road. The Lagos State CID Panti, Yaba is investigating.

16 May 2006: It was announced that five officers of the Nigerian Navy and 10 policemen were among those killed by the pipeline fire at Ilado village in Lagos on 12 May 2006. An intelligence report revealed that the dead security agents were among those posted to the area to monitor the pipelines but resorted to aiding and abetting pipeline vandals to carry out their criminal act in exchange for money. Security agents investigating the incident said the identities of the victims will be made public soon.

16 May 2006: Three armed robbers operating on a motorcycle, entered a boutique on No. 73 First Gate, Old Ojo Road, accosted the owner and gagged him, tied his hands and legs before ransacking his shop. The armed robbers made away with some clothes and a yet to be estimated amount of money. One of the robbers fell off the bike while attempting to escape and was lynched by irate mob while the other two escaped. One locally made pistol and two cartridges were recovered from the deceased robber. SCID Panti, Yaba is investigating.

17 May 2006: A suspected robber was reported to have died in police custody after being arrested with bullet wounds. The man had been detained in police custody pending his transfer to the hospital for treatment before prosecution. He later developed complications and died in custody. The State CID are investigating the matter.

17 May 2006: Fifteen teenage robbery suspects, who snatch money and other valuables under the Oshodi Bridge, were apprehended by police from the Mosafejo Police Station, Oshodi. The teenagers, who relocated to Lagos from different parts of the country and have now made the bridge their abode, confessed that, they carry out the robberies at night, arming themselves with knives.

17 May 2006: Police from Area “G” at Ogba in Lagos arrested a 45-year-old man at No 51, Yaya Abatan Street, Ogba with over 467,000 pieces of paper cut to Naira size. Police source said it was when the law enforcement agents executed a search warrant on the suspect�s house that the items were recovered. Also recovered were various incriminating documents, stamps, international passports and chemicals. The Area Commander, Mrs. Bose Dawudo, confirmed the development and said it would be investigated further.

17 May 2006: Four men entered a beer parlour at No.87 Ipaja road, Oke-Okoto in Agege area of Lagos State where they shot and killed a customer and robbed a sales girl. The customer, who was identified as an Inspector of Customs attached to the Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, had his cell phone stolen and sales girl was robbed of an unspecified amount of money. SCID Panti, Yaba is investigating.
18 May 2006: A Chevron contractor was robbed by a gang of about ten men at his home in Lekki Phase1, Lagos. The robbers were equipped with ladders and tools and cut their way through security bars to gain access. The man was assaulted by the robbers who were later confronted by an armed response team. One of the robbers was shot whilst the other men escaped.

19 May 2006: Page nightclub located at Opebi in Ikeja, Lagos, was gutted by fire. The club is said to have been commissioned a couple of months ago. Details of the incident were sketchy as the cause of the inferno is yet to be ascertained. Fire fighters promptly brought the fire under control. Police investigation is ongoing.

19 May 2006: A mobile policeman attached to Squadron 2, Keffi, Lagos Island was lynched by irate traders at the Ladipo Market, Mushin, for allegedly shooting their colleague, in the thigh. The cause of the incident was allegedly related to an argument over a defective GSM handset, which was sold to the Mopol, who was demanding for a refund.

20 May 2006: Two armed robbers were shot dead by the police in Meiran area of Lagos State during an exchange of fire with policemen at a local �gin joint� after robbing a victim of thousands of Naira and other valuable items. Police investigation is ongoing.

20 May 2006: An unidentified suspected armed robber was set on fire at Mobil filling station, Gbagada, Lagos, by an irate mob for robbing a man. The deceased, alongside others, allegedly attacked the victim at about 8:30 p.m. along Gbagada Expressway and dispossessed him of all his valuable items. Security agents are said to be trailing the deceased man�s accomplices.

21 May 2006: Armed robbers raided residential houses at Ogba, Lagos stole thousands of Naira, including valuable property and a wedding ring belonging to a 75-year-old woman. A Police investigation is ongoing.

21 May 2006: Internal clashes of street urchins commonly known as Area Boys were reported at Ilupeju and Ojota areas of Lagos State claiming supremacy over who should handle a cleaning contract awarded by the local government authority. Twenty of them were arrested while the wounded were taken to hospital for treatment. A Police investigation is ongoing.

23 May 2006: The suspected leader of a robbery gang was killed while six others were arrested during a fierce gun battle with a team of policemen at Gbagada, along the Ikorodu expressway. The gang is notorious for using commercial vehicles as bait to trap their victims whom they rob halfway to their destinations. Operational vehicle of the armed robbers and some of the victim�s valuables were recovered by the police. State CID Panti, Yaba is investigating the case.

22 May 2006: A 65-year-old, a staff member of Flour Mills Apapa, Lagos, was reportedly killed by ritualists. The woman�s body was found lying at Coca-Cola bus stop, Apapa, with all her vital organs removed by her killers. Police detectives at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Yaba, are said to be closing in on the woman�s killers. However, no arrest had been made. Ritualists are again on the prowl in Lagos after they went underground for some time when the police turned the heat on them. Security agents have alerted members of the public to be wary of their activities especially at late hours.
22 May 2006: Armed robbers raided some residents of Lekki Phase 1 area on Lagos Island and made away with valuable items estimated at millions of naira. One of the robbers was arrested with bullet wounds while others escaped with their loot. The arrested suspect is being interrogated at the State CID.

22 May 2006: Renewed hostilities between the area boys and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Iddo terminus, which spread to Idumota and Ijora Olopa was reported. Many innocent traders and passers-by lost their valuables to the miscreants who used the opportunity to commit crimes. Anti-riot policemen and an armoured tank were stationed at the ever-busy Ojota Motor Park to check the excesses of the hoodlums. Police investigation is ongoing.

22 May 2006: The Tree of Righteousness Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, at Jakande Estate, Isolo, was raided by armed robbers. A security guard identified as Mr. Nathaniel Ademefun was shot dead after putting up strong resistance to the robbers. The robbers made away with valuable items before the arrival of policemen from the Ejigbo Police Station. No arrest has been made. Police investigation is ongoing.

23 May 2006: Three suspects were arrested over the recent fire incident that burnt the second and third floors of the Defence Building in Lagos. Detectives at the state CID, Yaba, stated that the three men suspected to be security operatives were handed over to them by military authorities for interrogation. Last week, the second and the third floors, four-Storey building beside another 10-Storey building, both of the Ministry of Defence, housing the Nigeria Army School of Logistics, the Airforce and other offices, were gutted by fire on Moloney Street, Lagos Island. Sabotage is suspected in the fire incident. Investigation is ongoing.

24 May 2006: Armed robbers attacked a luxury bus along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, belonging to Young Shall Grow Group of Companies. All the passengers were reportedly robbed of their belongings and the two police escorts were shot. The vehicle was later taken to Ilasamaja Police Station with its occupants but the robbers stormed the police station and collected more items from the passengers while policemen on duty ran from the scene. Ilasamaja police Division is investigating.

25 May 2006: Moslado Hotel in Isolo in the outskirts of Lagos, was raided by armed robbers during which a waiter and a policeman were shot dead. The armed robbers stole valuables before their escape. No arrest has been made. A Police investigation is ongoing.

27 May 2006: Homicide detectives at the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department, Panti, Lagos, arrested a Lagos-based businessman, Mr. Gibson Owuamalam for allegedly killing his wife under mysterious circumstance before rushing her to the hospital. A Police investigation is ongoing.

JUNE

04 June 2006: A team of anti-robbery policemen attached to MAN-Centre Police Station, while on patrol along Cocoa Industrial Road, at Mao Filling Station, Ogba arrested two suspected armed robbers. One locally made single-barrel gun was recovered from them. An investigation is ongoing.
05 June 2006: Along the Owo-Ikare-Abuja Express Road, approximately fifteen armed robbers attacked an Abuja bound luxurious bus and shot dead two passengers while the rest of fifty passengers were stripped naked. Unspecified amount of monies and valuables were stolen from the victims by the robbers. Oba-Akoko Police Division Akure, Ondo State is investigating.

05 June 2006: A gang of four armed robbers raided �Our Lady Queen of All Hearts� Catholic Church, Tarmac Road, Adalemo, Sango, Ogun State. The robbers, who stormed the church late in the night, stole valuable property like a refrigerator, a television set, a CD player and radio sets. Investigations revealed that the robbers attacked the church following information that the money realised from its harvest was kept in the church. No casualty was recorded. Sango Ota Police Division is investigating.

05 June 2006: Churchgate, a textile company located in Odogunyan area of Lagos State in Ikorodu Local Government, was taken over by mobile policemen following the threats issued by staff of the company to set the company ablaze over non payment of salaries.

06 June 2006: Four soldiers attached to Marda Barracks along Herbert Macaulay Street, Yaba, Lagos, were arrested by soldiers from the same barracks, led by the duty officer. The arrested soldiers, armed with AK 47 rifles, hijacked a commercial mini in the area, robbed all the passengers of their property and moved towards the barracks. The robbery suspects have been handed over to the police for interrogation.

06 June 2006: Men of the State Security Service (SSS) stormed the premises of the Lagos Television (LTV), Agidingbi, Ikeja and stopped the formal launching of a new group, Centre for Discipline and Peace Initiative. The policemen were seen positioned at strategic points inside the complex, while four of the organisers were said to have been arrested for an undisclosed offence. Investigations, however, revealed that the programme was stopped because the organisers failed to get the necessary approval from the state government for the establishment of the group.

10 June 2006: Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in an inferno which occurred at the South West headquarters of the Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) in Ibadan. Although NITEL officials confirmed that only the battery and MTEL sections of the company were affected in the fire outbreak, they however said efforts are on to assess the level of damage. The Deputy General Manager said the outbreak occurred when the battery being used suddenly sparked and caught fire.

12 June 2006: The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized a container loaded with cocaine valued at N50 billion, at the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos. To conceal the cocaine, the importer also had 640 bags of white cement inside the container. The importer is yet to be arrested. An investigation is ongoing.

14 June 2006: The anti-robbery team of Orile Divisional Police Station while, on a stop and search duty along Orile-mile-2 Express way, intercepted a commercial motorcyclist carrying two passengers. The two passengers jumped down from the motorcycle on sighting police while one of the suspects abandoned his pair of sandals. On careful examination, the sandals were found to contain two locally made single barrel pistols and three live cartridges embedded in its sole. The suspects succeeded in escaping. SCID Panti is investigating.
15 June 2006: About fifteen heavily armed men attacked an old generation bank located near the sea in Aiyetoro area of Epe, Lagos State. The suspects fled on arrival of police abandoning their robbery attempt and some of their implements. The State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba had taken over investigation of the matter.

15 June 2006: Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) located along Testing Ground area of Osogbo, was seriously damaged by fire. Some of the staff of the Commission were said to be busy in their offices during the fire outbreak. Property destroyed included air-conditioners, office furniture and stationery. The cause of the fire outbreak was due to a power surge. Though fire officers were called, they did not arrive until most of the important offices had been damaged with properties and equipment worth millions of naira destroyed.

16 June 2006: Two people were killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed in Lagos Island when two factions of area boys clashed. The clash, which took place at Aroloya area of the local government, disrupted commercial activities, while commercial vehicles abandoned the route for safer ones. It took the intervention of policemen from Area A Lion Building and Adeniji-Adele Police Station, to bring the situation under control after more than three hours of siege by the miscreants.

17 June 2006: A two-storey building housing about eight tenants at Orile area, Lagos collapsed killing two people. The value of the property destroyed is yet to be determined while an evacuation and rescue exercise was considered adequate. Orile Police Division is investigating.

19 June2006: A security man guarding a shopping complex at Katangowa market committed arson by setting the complex and many shops ablaze for reasons yet undisclosed. Attempts to prevent the man from the act were prevented as he was armed with a machete. The suspect was eventually apprehended and handed over to police.

20 June 2006: An oil vessel, M. T. Tuma, operated by Obat Oil (Petroleum) exploded at the Berger Depot in Apapa, Lagos. The explosion occurred following a fire outbreak from the engine room of the vessel which spread rapidly to the rest of the cabins. Seven people were suspected to have been killed by the inferno and several others wounded. The Apapa Police Division is investigating the incident.

20 June 2006: A team of anti-robbery policemen attached to Ishashi Police Station, while on foot patrol, apprehended two suspected armed robbers on an unregistered motorcycle. The suspects jumped down from the motorcycle and attempted to escape on sighting the policemen. When the motorcycle was searched, one locally made pistol, with two live cartridges was recovered from the back seat. A Police investigation is on going.

21 June 2006: A policeman and two other people were allegedly killed while other people were seriously injured in another bank robbery that occurred in the Ojodu area of Lagos. The robbers, who were said to have come through a nearby creek, reportedly came shooting sporadically before gaining entrance into the bank. An undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the bank. The robbers reportedly fled in a boat after the robbery. A police investigation is ongoing.

22 June 2006: No fewer than three people were killed while many others sustained injuries during a clash between two rival groups of Area Boys fighting for supremacy in Surulere, Lagos. Thirty of the suspects were arrested. The State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba is investigating.

22 June 2006: A gang of ten armed robbers stormed a new generation bank at Ogudu, Ojota area of Lagos State. The robbers arrived at the bank premises in a convoy of five vehicles. They succeeded in breaking into the bank, stole an unspecified amount of money from the cashier but could not break into the vault before a team of policemen arrived at the scene with helicopters and engaged the robbers in a shootout that lasted over two hours. The robbers killed four people, including a police officer. The police succeeded in arresting three of the armed robbers while the others escaped with bullet wounds.

23 June 2006: Two female members of a syndicate that specialised in duping innocent people, were picked up by the policemen from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja in Lagos. The suspects are currently helping the police in investigation.

23 June 2006: A distress call was received at State CID, Panti-Yaba that a gang of armed robbers broke into a plastic manufacturing company close to Ejigbo Community Bank. A team of Anti-Robbery policemen from the station attended the scene resulting in the suspects leaving before any property was removed from the premises. Several expended shells of 7.62mm and 9mm calibre ammunition were recovered. Investigation is ongoing.

24 June 2006: The Ogun State Police Command arrested and paraded three armed suspected armed robbers who allegedly specialise in disguising themselves in police uniforms for robbery operations.

24 June 2006: Armed bandits raided a Jometi Communications Cybercafe, located along Edun and Wuraola Streets in Shogunle, Oshodi. The robbers visited the cybercafe pretending to be customers who came to browse. They robbed customers of their mobile phones and also stole a large amount of money from the cafe.

25 June 2006: A bag containing severed human body parts was found dumped in a gutter along Acme Road in Ogba Industrial layout. The bag contained dismembered human parts, an indication that the victim might have been killed by ritualists.

26 June 2006: A member of an armed robbery gang, who took part in two operations in Lagos was arrested behind the wheel of a Nissan Vanette at Magodo, Shangisha, Isheri, Lagos. 42 live rounds of ammunition were recovered. The suspect confessed to the police at Magodo, Shangisha Division that his gang used the vehicle to rob a woman who resides at No. 26B, Maiye Ogundana Street, Magodo of her jewellery, cell phones and N40,000 at gunpoint. He also disclosed that his gang robbed another woman of her Toyota Corolla saloon car. The case was been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos for further investigation.

26 June 2006: Several people were injured when two factions of traders at the popular Ladipo market in Mushin, Lagos clashed over the allocation of shops of the newly constructed Zik Plaza at the market. This clash escalated with two people being killed. Fifteen people were arrested. It took the combined teams of operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mushin Division and armed mobile policemen from Squadron 22, Ikeja to bring the situation under control.
27 June 2006: A police patrol team in Lagos recovered a Toyota Avensis and a magazine loaded with 17 rounds of live ammunition while on patrol along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway on Oshodi Bridge. The car had been reported to have been stolen by three armed men along the expressway before it was abandoned. During a search on the vehicle, the weapon and a Samsung cell phone were recovered. The matter was transferred to SCID, Panti for further investigation.

27 June 2006: Police in Lagos uncovered a private garage within the heart of high brow Ikeja, where stolen cars are stored and later sold to unsuspecting members of the public. Though the owner of the private garage is presently on the run, his wife and two others were arrested. They are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba. An automatic spraying machine and several other pieces of equipment were recovered from the private car park.

29 June 2006: Armed robbers along Iba Road robbed Commuters whilst travelling in commercial buses while they were held in a traffic jam. It would appear that one of the armed robbers, who had posed as a passenger asked the other passengers to surrender their money and mobile phones. The armed robbers, who were said to be between the ages of 20 and 24 years, told them not to raise any alarm as they were armed. The operation was carried out close to where policemen and soldiers were, yet the robbers escaped without incident.

JULY

02 July 2006: Area Boys, armed with pistols, cutlasses, bottles and other dangerous weapons, engaged in a fight at the Pelewuru area of Lagos Island. The area boys shot a Police Sergeant on duty at IBB Pin-down point in his leg when he tried to intervene. The area boys escaped through the waterside on sighting reinforcements of Policemen led by the Adeniji Adele Divisional Police Officer.

03 July 2006: A patrol team attached to Anthony Police Division rescued a victim who was about to be lynched by some hoodlums. The reason for the attempted lynching at the Anthony Bus Stop area under the bridge along Ikorodu Road is not known. The hoodlums escaped in different directions on sighting police.

05 July 2006: Men of the Nigeria Police force Apapa shot and killed two suspected armed robbers and arrested two others. The robbers were said to have been terrorising the Apapa area on motorcycles and were on the run after shooting and robbing a victim of the sum of five million naira. One Berretta pistol with its serial number filed out, eight live rounds of ammunition, the stolen money and the motorcycle were recovered from the suspects.

06 July 2006: A team of anti-robbery policemen attached to Isheri Police Station arrested a man dressed in police uniform named Idajili Olizebi at CMD Road, Ikosi-Ketu, who claimed to be from Ikeja Police College. Police investigation revealed that Olizebi deserted the force about two years ago.

07 July 2006: A team of anti-robbery policemen attached to Festac Area Command, while on patrol along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, arrested two suspected armed robbers with one locally made double barrel gun during an attempt to rob a victim.

08 July 2006: Four members of Marine Police deployed to the Anti-Vandalism Task Force were arrested by Mobile Policemen on guard duty at NNPC Pipeline, Tarkwa Bay Lagos, for siphoning fuel from a leaking NNPC pipeline, which had been previously vandalised.

10 July 2006: A commercial bus travelling along Third Mainland Bridge crashed killing approximately twenty seven passengers, some of whom fell into Lagos Lagoon. Local fisherman and Waterways Authorities carried out searches for bodies and survivors.

10 July 2006: Three people were killed in Sagamu and Ikenne Local Government Areas of Ogun State during a cult clash. The police have arrested 14 persons in connection with the clash, which left several other persons injured. The clash was said to have been caused by disagreement over the formula for sharing money given to the cultists by some businessmen in Sagamu. Weapons such as cutlasses, guns and clubs were freely used. Police Public Relations Officer who confirmed the clash however said there had been no fatalities, adding that 14 persons had been arrested over the incident.

11 July 2006: Passengers of a luxury bus belonging to a Lagos-based transport company forced the driver of the bus into the premises of the Public Complaint Bureau, Lagos State Police Command, in protest against an armed robbery attack on them inside the bus. It was alleged that no sooner they had reached Lokoja than six robbery suspects stood up and seized the steering from the driver and diverted to Agbor before robbing all the passengers of money, mobile telephones and other valuables at gunpoint.

12 July 2006: Stray bullets hit and killed three passers-by and wounded another, in a sporadic shooting by a gang of armed men suspected to be robbers along Oluti bus stop, on Badagry Expressway.

12 July 2006: A suspected armed robber and a politician were arrested by the police in Afuze, headquarters of Owan East Council of Edo State. The arrest followed the raid on a Government Health Centre in the area. Armed bandits had previously invaded the Urban Health Centre, Iyakhara where they robbed the matron and patients late in the night. The victims were said to have been held hostage during the raid.

12 July 2006: Anti-robbery police team from Orile Division, whilst on stop and search at Doyin black spot accosted a Mazda E2200 bus with four occupants who opened fire on police. In the course of the gun battle, two of the robbers were shot dead while the two others escaped with bullet wounds. Two locally made double barrel pistols and the robber�s operational bus were recovered.

13 July 2006: A thirty-man gang of armed robbers said to have been armed with AK-47 rifles, pistols and other dangerous weapons including sledge hammers, iron cutters, cutlasses and iron rods, invaded the Electronics section, Line-C Alaba International market, Ojo. A combined team of anti-robbery police squads from Ojo division, SCID Panti and Mushin challenged and dispersed the suspects who had already broken into fifty-eight lock-up stores and made away with a yet to be estimated amount of money. No casualties were recorded. Ten rounds of expended 9mm-calibre ammunition were recovered at the scene.

13 July 2006: A gang of armed men, invaded No.3 Lawan Close, Abule-Egba U Turn, where they shot and killed a police constable attached to Meiran Divisional Police Headquarters.

14 July 2006: An anti-crime police patrol team attached to the Ikeja police division, while on duty at Alade market black-spot, intercepted one Honda Accord saloon car which had earlier reported stolen at gunpoint. The occupants of the said vehicle opened fire on the police team. During the exchange of gunfire, the armed man abandoned the car and escaped. The car was searched and a bag containing twenty-five live cartridges was recovered.

15 July 2006: A mobile police constable attached to MOPOL 2 Keffi who was deployed at Marina, Lagos, was dispossessed of his rifle AK 47 by some men in green khaki uniforms.

15 July 2006: A team of Policemen from Mushin intercepted two armed robbers operating on a motorcycle, robbing innocent persons. The policemen shot and killed one of the robbers while one other escaped with their operational bike. One locally made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered from the deceased robber.

15 July 2006: Two rivals of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ebute-Ero branch, armed with cutlasses, guns and other dangerous weapons engaged in a supremacy fight. The incident recorded a casualty.

16 July 2006: Suspected political thugs, attacked the campaign train of the Peoples Democratic Party Governorship aspirant in Lagos State, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, leaving at least six people seriously injured. Three vehicles belonging to the political campaign organisation and some musical instruments were also vandalised by the thugs, who reportedly wielded dangerous weapons and charms. The Governorship aspirant, who was in the convoy at the time of the attack, escaped unhurt. Seven suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.

17 July 2006: The Supreme Court upheld the death sentence passed in 2000 by a Benue State High Court on a police officer, for killing two students of Benue State University, Makurdi. Five justices of the Supreme Court unanimously agreed that the former Deputy Superintendent of Police and a Divisional Police Officer of B Division Police Station must die for killing the students under inexcusable circumstances. A police sergeant who was also alleged to have shot the students had his death sentence quashed by the apex court.

17 July 2006: Youths in Uzeba apprehended a man carrying the head of a man he allegedly murdered for ritual purposes. The suspect, a casual labourer who is now in police custody, allegedly severed the head of the victim who was taking him to the farmland he (the suspect) was hired to clear.

17 July 2006: Anti-robbery policemen attached to Surulere police station, while on foot patrol at Moshalashi under-bridge, intercepted a man in a taxicab. When the suspect was searched, two pistols with one live cartridge were recovered from him.

18 July 2006: A man was arrested by the police for allegedly using a toy gun to rob a trader of valuables worth N100, 000 along Komolafe Street in Ilesa, Osun State. The suspect and his accomplice, who is still at large, broke into the home of the victim and robbed him of his valuables, two 14-inch TV sets; one pressing iron, one stabiliser, a VCD player, three mobile phones and N8, 000 cash.

18 July 2006: A team of anti-robbery policemen attached to Ketu police station arrested two men suspected to be armed robbers as they attempted to board a bus at Ketu Motor Park. The suspects were searched and two locally made pistols, twenty rounds of live ammunition, one big hammer and two chisels concealed in a bag were recovered.

19 July 2006: Six armed robbery suspects, who specialised in robbing luxury buses, were caught when they engaged policemen from the Oyo State Police Command in a gun-battle. The gang was said to have gone to operate along Gbongan – Ikire Expressway but could not escape to enjoy their loot as the police killed two and arrested the others.

19 July 2006: Men of the State C.I.D, Panti-Yaba Lagos foiled the robbery attempt of ten armed men in an unmarked white Toyota Hiace Bus that entered Conoil filling station, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Police on duty at the station and the SCID team exchanged gunfire with the robbers, who fled the scene empty handed.

20 July 2006: Commercial activities at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) shed of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport was grounded to a halt as clearing agents protesting the No Entry order into NAHCO shed, engaged security operatives in a brawl. The battle between both parties spilled over to airport road, creating serious traffic jams that had commuters stranded for hours. It was reported that no fewer than 300 of the agents, said to be members of the Association of Nigerian Customs Licensed Agents (ANCLA), were locked out in the process, and this sparked off a protest among the agents who considered FAANs action punitive. The situation was brought under control by the deployment of the police.

20 July 2006: Seven armed robbers invaded Ikorodu police barracks and stole an unspecified amount of cash, mobile telephone handsets and other valuables. In a related incident, a mobile policeman on duty at the station thwarted an attack on Conoil filling station on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway by another gang of 10 robbers.

21 July 2006: A police officer attached to Makinde Police Station, while on traffic control along Anjorin Street, Oshodi, discovered a Mitsubishi Montero Jeep with a broken windscreen parked on the street. On close observation of the vehicle, the officer discovered a male corpse with bullet wounds inside the vehicle. On further search at the police station, six empty shells of 7.62mm-calibre ammunition, one cell phone, an identity identifying the deceased and a bag containing the sum of N78, 000 were recovered.

22 July 2006: A team of policemen, attached to Alakara Division, on foot patrol at Bishop Junction along Agege motor road, Idioro, Mushin, intercepted eight occupants in a commercial Volkswagen mini-bus. Two locally made pistols and seven live cartridges were found in the vehicle. One of the suspects was arrested while the others fled.

27 July 2006: A PDP aspirant for the Governorship of Lagos, Chief Funsho Williams, was murdered by unknown assailants at his residence at Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.
