Port Harcourt airport shut till December???

A dawn fire broke out at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Friday, forcing its closure till December.

The Director of Operations, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, John Ezenwankwo, who briefed journalists about the fire, said it occurred at the power house.

He said the fire threw the airport into darkness throughout Friday, adding that its cause could not be immediately determined.

He also said the airport would be shut from 6pm on Friday for four months, adding that the period of the closure would be used for the resurfacing of its runway.

Ezenwankwo, however, prevented journalists from accessing the scene of the fire.

A senior FAAN official said it would be shut till December.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident caused the diversion of domestic flights to Calabar and Owerri airports while international flights were rerouted to Lagos and Abuja airports.

Later on Friday, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority issued a statement announcing the closure of the airport for four months.

The NCAA had said in a statement that flights would be diverted to Calabar, Owerri and Shell�s Osubi airstrip in Warri during the closure to enable it carry out a �total rehabilitation.�

FAAN�s Public Relations Manager, Port Harcourt Airport, Mrs Christie Nwoke, told our correspondent that the closure was to ensure total repair of all the facilities at the aiport, including the power system.

Nwoke said she did not know for how long it would last.
