Delta House orders Chevron/Texaco to pay

DELTA State House of Assembly yesterday passed a resolution ordering the management of Chevron/Texaco company to pay �reasonable compensation� to the victims of Ugborodo community in which four persons were shot dead and 25 others wounded at the company�s Tank Farm during 4th February 2005 protest.

The impeached Speaker, Mr. Young Daniel Igbrude and two others who were pardoned and recalled from suspension shunned yesterday�s sitting which was conducted with only 12 members including the Speaker presiding out of the 29-member Assembly.

Members of the public including the press had gathered at the galleries to witness the comeback of the three legislators but were however disappointed. The resolution calling for compensation followed the adoption of the Report submitted to the House by the Committee on Oil and Mineral Matters.

When the Speaker, Mr. Franc Enekorogha put the questions on whether to adopt the recommendations of the Committee that investigated the crisis, it was unanimously carried.

The adopted recommendations are:

*That this Honourable House calls on his Excellency, the Executive Governor Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori to prevail on the management of Chevron/Texaco to immediately set a machinery to implement the 17th July 2002 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the community, the company and witnessed by the state government since this formed the basis of the crisis of the 4th February 2005

*The company to pay reasonable compensation to the victims of the crisis. Calls on the Commander of the Joint Task Force Warri to investigate the killings/ wounding, ascertaining those responsible and bringing them to book among others.
