Four persons were killed on Thursday in a clash between youths of Affiesere and Ekiugbo communities in Delta State.
Among them were Nnamdi Ngwuokor, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of B Division, Ughelli, Delta State as well as an inspector and two of the youths.
Several others were injured, including women and children.
The youths had engaged in a free for all in the early hours of the day, using pump action rifles, axes and machetes.
Ngwuokor, on receiving the report, mobilised his men and headed for the area.
The youths ambushed the team and killed him together with the inspector.
The cause of the conflict was not known at press time.
The Ughelli-Patani Road had to be closed, but was re-opened around 5 p.m.
Police Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Okuobi, confirmed the deaths.
The bodies of the two officers have been deposited at the Ughelli Central Hospital mortuary.
More anti-riot policemen have drafted to the communities.
