Police, Navy clash averted in Port Harcourt

A MAJOR clash between Police and the Navy was averted in Port Harcourt yesterday but this was after a Navy rating reportedly sustained a gun shot injury from the incident.

Sources told Vanguard that trouble started around the Borikiri area, very close to a Navy Barracks when a Naval officer ignored the directive of some Mobile Policemen controlling traffic on the ever-busy road in the area.

The action of the Navy personnel sources continued, generated some arguments. And the Navy man allegedly ordered his colleagues in the barracks to immediately disarm the Mobile Policemen who in turned resisted the attempt. While they were dragging the riffle, according to sources it immediately let out accidental shots, which hit one of the Navy ratings. Angered by the shot, the Navy made effort to mobilize to attack a Police station in the area but for the timely intervention of the top brass of the two forces.

When contacted on phone about the incident, the state Police PRO, Mrs. Baresua Ireju described it as a minor disagreement between two sister forces, �a fracas between two sister forces.
