The Niger Delta remains an area of unrest and frequent violence. In this regard, the U.S. Consulate is aware of recent threats made against the lives and safety of expatriate oil workers. These threats are made by people purporting to belong to one of several militant groups in the Niger Delta. While these threats are directed against oil workers, all American citizens living and working in the Niger Delta region should maintain a heightened security presence at all times. Travel to the region is to be avoided whenever possible. Prior disturbances have targeted U.S. companies and other international concerns operating in the area.
The Consulate strongly advises all American citizens to exercise caution in their daily activities, and to avoid travel to the Niger Delta region. Americans in the area should limit their travel, particularly at night, and should avoid public venues whenever possible. Americans should review their security procedures, remain vigilant to their surroundings, and report specific incidences of targeted violence to the U.S. Consulate in Lagos at 01-261-0050.
