It was a blood day yesterday in Lagos, as a police patrol team vehicle, attached to Ikotun Divisional Police Station, ran into a gang of dare-devil armed robbers, who opened fire on them killed six instantly, and injured several others.
According to a police source who spoke under anonymity, the armed gang were returning from a robbery operation in Ikotun, an outskirt of Lagos, and met the police patrol team on their way from the scene of the crime.
He said the team have patrolled the whole divisional area all through the night, and while they were returning to their station, the robbers, who had sighted them afar off, laid ambush for them, and while trying to drive past, suddenly, opened fire on them.
It will be recalled that more than eight policemen had been killed by armed robbers in Lagos in the last one month.
Speaking on the incidence, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Olubode Ojajuni, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the police in Lagos is trying to tie every loopholes to avoid a re-occurrence, adding that efforts were geared towards the arrest of the hoodlums and rid the state of crime and criminality.
Meanwhile, remains of the slain policemen have been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary in Lagos.
