Governors campaign office bombed

The campaign office of the Bayelsa State Governor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, was on Tuesday night rocked by an explosion.

The attack on the office, known as the Green Movement, came barely 10 days after the state secretariat of Peoples Democratic Party at Yenizue-Gene, Yenagoa, was hit by explosives.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the impact of the dynamite thrown into the two-storey building at the Ekeki area of Yenagoa by unidentified youths sent residents scampering for safety.

Although no casualty was recorded, the window panes of the building were shattered.

One of the security men at the building said he suspected two men who came to the area on a commercial motorcycle, popularly called okada, a few minutes before the dynamite exploded.

The guard added that the two men hurriedly left on the same okada, immediately after the explosion.

An elderly man, whose building is adjacent to the campaign office, corroborated the security mans claim.

He said he also sighted the two men on okada.

The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, who said no arrest had been made in connection with the incident, noted that investigations had begun.

Jonathan, who visited the office to assess the extent of the damage, reiterated his resolve to make 2007 elections in the state the most peaceful in the country.

He said he was sure that those behind the incident would be arrested and prosecuted.

The governor said he remained unshaken, calm and resolute in his mission to make sure the state was peaceful.

He condemned the recourse to violence by politicians whenever they lost bid for political offices.

Jonathan, who promised to take care of any resident of the area who incurred damage as a result of the attack, called on security agencies to step up the surveillance and the policing of the state.

The Director-General of the Green Movement, Chief Fyneman Wilson, expressed shock at the attack.

He said he suspected that those who lost out during the recent PDP primaries in the state were behind the explosion.

Wilson, a former Deputy Chairman of the PDP in the state, called on the police to investigate the incident.
