At least eight people were killed while 18 others were seriously injured on Tuesday in Nigeria’s northern city of Kaduna when a truck crashed into a crowd of political supporters, said a road safety official.
Kasaba Musa Haruna said that the accident occurred at the venue of the ruling People’s Democratic Party run-off to the state gubernatorial primaries.
“The death toll could be higher as the injured sustained first degree burns and other serious injuries,” he said.
The truck crushed vehicles parked along the thoroughfare, he said.
“A truck coming out of Kaduna at high speed lost control and ran into stationary vehicles and crushed six of the vehicles.”
“Three vehicles burst into flames. Seven people died on the spot while a young boy of 10 years died later in hospital.”
The bodies of the victims have been taken to a government hospital while the injured have been admitted into a nearby military hospital, he said.
