Michelin lays off 1,200 workers

Not less than 1,200 workers of Michelin Tyre Nigeria Limited have lost their jobs following the decision of the tyre firm to close its operations in the country.

Our correspondent learnt that the workers had been issued letters of disengagement.

It was also gathered that the workers had begun the process of mobilising Nigerians against the patronage of the companys products.

They are angered by the claim of the management of the firm that it was closing down operations in Nigeria due to low patronage.

The workers under the aegis of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees, said on Tuesday that its companys plan was to upgrade its plants outside the country and to subsequently dump its products on the Nigerian markets.

Speaking with our correspondent, NUCFRLNPE President, Mr. Boniface Isok, said, The reason adduced for the closure is not convincing to us as a union, since Michelin has a large rubber plantation in Nigeria from where its raw materials are sourced.

The union is enlisting the support of Nigerians as well as the Federal Government in its campaign
