The Executive Director of Bellview Airlines, Mr. Gbenga Olowo, has expressed concern at the poor state of facilities in the nations aviation industry.
Olowo spoke on Friday in Lagos at a seminar organised to stimulate growth in the nations aviation sector.
He said it was worrisome that airport facilities and airspace monitoring infrastructure were not being improved or updated to cope with the increase in traffic, warning that the development could jeopardise safety.
Olowo stressed the need to develop the runways and other facilities, to cope with the upsurge in traffic.
He also said the N19.5billion intervention fund recently released to the sector should be deployed speedily to transform the facilities.
The Director-General of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren, said efforts were being made to expand the airport.
Unless available infrastructure are made to meet the growing traffic, then we have not started, Demuren said.
Demuren said NCAA would ensure that the airports met safety standards, noting that NCAA now had the power to certify airports.
He said work was going on at the Port-Harcourt airport, while the runway at Lagos would also be worked upon.
Demuren said the safe tower project was also part of efforts to improve infrastructure.
