15,000 Security Personnel To Supervise Elections In C�River

The Cross River Police Command has stated that about 15,000 security personnel will participate in the general elections billed for this month.

The police said 10,000 out of the figure will be their personnel while the remaining will be drafted from the military and paramilitary outfits, including the customs, immigration, civil defence corps, and the rest.

The State Police Commissioner, Danlami Yar�Adua, said this in Calabar at a 2007 elections stakeholders forum organized at the instance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

At the forum which held at the State Library Complex, Yar�Adua was represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Musa Kano.

Yar�Adua said the police on its part would ensure that lives and property are secured before, during and after the elections.

He said given the task ahead and the fact that the nation�s image is at stake, it behoves all stakeholders in the impending elections to operate within the limits of the Constitution and the provision of the 2006 Electoral Act.

The commissioner advised politicians to shun violence during the elections, as the police would deal seriously with anybody caught engaging in violent conducts during and after the elections.
