Obasanjo Warns MOSSOP Against Violent Agitation

President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday at Bori, the headquarters of Ogoniland handed a warning to the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People to stop being a clog in the wheel of progress as their agitative stance was no longer useful in a democratic environment.

Obasanjo who insisted that he has given undue attention to the requests of Ogoni people pointed out that while they were still trying to attract the attention of the Nigerian and Foreign interest to their plight, the approach adopted then was good but that now that the attention has been drawn to the issue, they were no longer useful.

MOSOP was formed to create awareness and attract attention to the plight of the people nationally and internationally which has been achieved. I want to tell Mitte that he has tried but enough is enough. Everybody who has spoken has complained that you are now becoming a cog in the wheel of peace and progress in Ogoniland. That is not a good thing to say about you. You should do a self examination, a self analysis, he said.

Addressing the youths at the gathering who booed successive speakers after the occasion started about six hour behind schedule and were appearing restive when the President was about delivering his address, he warned them that if they did not want to listen to him, he would drop the microphone and leave, insisting that it was unruly of them to make noise when elders were talking.

He said the decision of whether or not Shell Petroleum Development Company would continue oil exploration in the region would depend on negotiations of all stakeholders to be taken after the remediation exercise.
