Chevron hostages Released – MEND Announce Suspension of Action

Six foreigners working for oil company Chevron who were kidnapped on May 1 have been released, the Italian foreign ministry said on Saturday.

A ministry official said the workers, four Italians, an American and a Croatian, were safe and in the hands of the oil company.

(AP) _ The main militant group in Nigeria’s lawless south pledged a one-month suspension of hostilities to allow the government of new President Umaru Yar’Adua time to create a plan for lasting peace in the Niger Delta region where Africa’s oil giant pumps its crude.

“We will suspend attacks on oil installations for one month,” a spokesman for the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said. The spokesman said it would be “a period which we hope the government will take advantage of to ruminate on positive and realistic measures towards a just peace in the delta.”
