Work resumes at Port Harcourt airport on Monday

Repairs on the Port-Harcourt International Airports runway, handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, will resume on Monday, two months after it pulled out as a result of the insurgency in the Niger-Delta region.

The construction giant had in May this year, pulled out of the area, saying it could not guarantee the safety of its workers, especially expatriates who had been the targets of the militia.

The General Manager, Public Affairs, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mr. Akin Olukunle, disclosed to our correspondent on Thursday that the company, after meetings with the authority, had agreed to work on the airport runway.

He stated that repairs on the runway were expected to be completed between August and September 2007.

Olukunle highlighted other areas which needed to be repaired to include the airport terminal building and the runway lightings.

He explained that work could not start on the terminal and the lightings until the runway repairs were concluded.

The airport was closed about two years ago following series of complaints on the collapse of infrastructure at the airport.
