The fuss over VPs asset declaration

Vice President Goodluck Jonathan was, last week, at the centre stage of political discourse after his avowed non-readiness to make his asset declaration public.

Apart from well-meaning Nigerians who raised a moral question on the Vice Presidents posturing towards the issue, the Action Congress (AC), through its spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, seemed to have made most critical issues out of the whole show.

Meanwhile, Jonathan had earlier been quoted as asserting: “I have gone through relevant laws and did not come across it anywhere that I should declare my assets publicly. It is not mandatory. That means it is a matter of choice but I dont see any big deal about it”. Such was the assertion described as “careless and out of tune” by Lai Mohammed.

The AC was quoted as vowing: “We will stick to the issues by renewing our call on His Excellency, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, to toe the path of honour by publishing the assets he has now declared seven times in line with the leadership shown by his boss, President Umaru YarAdua. Those at the helm of the nations affairs owe it a duty to the citizens who supposedly elected them, not only to be transparent, but also to be seen to be so. The leadership of the country has shown the way and it is only honourablenot necessarily as a matter of lawfor members of his team to follow suit. It is therefore imperative, not even mandated by law, for the VP to stop hiding behind one finger and publish his assets declaration immediately”.
