Alamieyeseigha returns, says Im fit

FORMER governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha yesterday returned to the country from Dubai, United Arab Emirate (UAE) where he had undergone treatment.

Alamieyeseigha who arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja aboard Emirate airline flight about 3.30pm said he was fine.

Though he declined comments on questions posed to him by Daily Champion, the ex-governor said: “I have nothing to say.”

On his health, however, Alamieyeseigha who wore stripped white shirt and trousers with a black bowler hat said, “you can see me walking briskly.”

On what his future plans are, he said, “Im a Nigerian just like any other person.”

On arrival at the airport, the former governor was met by an aide who could not be immediately identified. The male aide was seen assisting Alamieyeseigha to convey him and his luggage out of the airport.

His return was, however, devoid of any formal reception as his supporters were not at the airport to welcome him into the country, unlike what obtained when he was number one citizen of Bayelsa State.

Two young gentlemen who recognised the ex-governor, welcomed him back to Nigeria. Pleading anonymity, they said they are Ijaw and that they admire Alamieyeseighas courage.

Daily Champion recalls that the ex-governor became a free man on July 27, 2007 barely 24 hours he was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Alamieyeseigha who has been standing trial on a 40-count charge of money laundering, illegal acquisition of property and false declaration of assets had entered a plea bargain, which facilitated his freedom.

He left Nigeria for Dubai August 1 to continue his treatment.

Earlier, Alamieyeseigha was deported from Dubai where he had been taken by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for proper medical treatment.
