Shell to rehabilitate oil spill victims

Shell Petroleum Development Company has inspected the site of the oil spill in Ikot Ada Udo in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, with a promise to rehabilitate those affected by the devastation of the spill.

Shells visit to the site came on the heels of the scathing criticism of the oil company for its refusal to honour the invitation of the community since the beginning of the oil spill about two months ago.
Shells representative, Mr. Paulinus Bassey, on Wednesday in Ikot Abasi debunked the allegation that the suffering of the affected community did not disturb the oil company.

Bassey explained that apart from inspecting the site of the oil spill, arrangements would be made to cork the well and also provide relief materials to the community.

On the expected compensation from Shell, Bassey pointed out that the issue of compensation was still in court and declined to comment on it.

He pledged that the inspection team, which include officials from the Ministry of Environment in the state and Abuja, would do a thorough work to assuage the feelings of the people of Ikot Ada Udoh.

The paramount ruler of Ikot Abasi, Edidem Ntuk Obom, expressed dissatisfaction over the lackadaisical attitude of Shell towards the plight of the people of the area.
