Lawmakers suspended for fighting inside aeroplane

TWO female members of Cross River State House of Assembly, who fought aboard an Arik Airline flight from Abuja to Calabar last week, have been suspended for one month by the House for the act.

The suspended members are Mrs. Uduak Akiba Ebo representing Calabar Municipal constituency and Dr. Pualine Ekuri representing Etung constituency.

The resolution of the House read in part: Reports reached the House of Assembly that on Wednesday, September 15, during the return trip from Abuja, a scuffle ensued between the two honourable members aboard an Arik Airline flight.

The ugly incident is even more regrettable as there was an important passenger on the said flight which was already air-borne. Subsequently, the House instituted a five-man committee, led by member representing Yala 1 constituency, Honourable Larry Odey, to investigate the incident and make appropriate recommendations to the House. The committee, having investigated the incident, submitted its report to the House on Thursday, recommended the suspension of the two lawmakers.

The suspended female lawmakers were ordered to tender a written apology to the House at the expiration of their suspension. Meanwhile, the Speaker, Mr. Frank Adah has written a letter of apology to Governor Liyel Imoke, regretting the incident. Nigerian Tribune gathered that it took the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Ekama Awara, and a few others some time to stop the fight in the aircraft.
